Corrosion is one of the major threats shortening pipeline service life, and stainless steel flanges become preferred flange pipe fittings for media with corrosivity. Different stainless steel grades deliver differentiated anti-corrosion performance. 304 stainless steel flanges adapt to general weak corrosive environments such as fresh water and atmospheric environments. 316 and 316L stainless steel flanges contain molybdenum elements, possessing outstanding resistance to chloride ion corrosion, widely used in seawater treatment, marine engineering, chemical salt solution transmission pipelines. 321 stainless steel flanges add titanium elements to stabilize structure under high temperature conditions, suitable for high-temperature corrosive fluid pipelines in chemical plants. The anti-corrosion capability of stainless steel relies on a passive chromium oxide film formed on the metal surface. This compact film isolates metal substrates from surrounding corrosive media. Once the film is damaged by scratches, impact or chemical erosion, local corrosion such as pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion will occur rapidly. During production and transportation, manufacturers must protect flange sealing surfaces to avoid hard object scratching. Compared with carbon steel flanges, stainless steel materials have higher hardness and poorer thermal conductivity, bringing higher requirements for machining parameters. Cutting speed, tool material and cooling liquid need reasonable configuration to ensure machining precision and surface quality. Welding construction of stainless steel flanges also requires standardized operation. Argon protection welding is adopted to prevent welding joint oxidation, which would reduce local corrosion resistance. Many users ignore matching between flanges and connecting pipes. Using stainless steel flanges with carbon steel pipes may trigger galvanic corrosion under humid medium conditions. Insulation gaskets and insulating sleeves can be installed to isolate dissimilar metals and suppress electrochemical corrosion. Surface treatment options for stainless steel flanges include pickling passivation and mechanical polishing. Pickling passivation optimizes the passive film and improves overall corrosion resistance. Polished flanges have smoother surfaces and reduce medium residue that induces local corrosion. In seawater desalination, food processing, pharmaceutical production and environmental protection wastewater treatment industries, stainless steel flange fittings effectively reduce pipeline maintenance frequency and avoid safety hazards caused by flange corrosion penetration and medium leakage. Although the initial procurement cost is higher than carbon steel alternatives, comprehensive economic benefits appear in long-term continuous operation projects.
