A lap joint flange is fitted over the pipe end by means of a lap or steel ring, allowing the flange to move freely on the pipe end. The steel ring or lap forms the sealing surface, and the flange functions to compress it tightly. As can be seen, shielded by the steel ring or lap, the lap joint flange does not come into contact with the process medium. Since the flange is movable and not directly connected to the pipe, it is known as a lap joint flange.
Applications of Lap Joint Flanges
The primary advantage of lap joint flanges is the absence of weld seams inside the pipe. They are adopted for applications with strict internal‑pipe requirements. For example, lap joint flanges are required for pneumatic conveying systems where internal pipe treatment and weld‑free inner surfaces are mandatory.
Lap joint flanges can also be used for stainless‑steel piping to cut costs. In this configuration, the flange body is made of carbon steel while the lap component is stainless steel. This eliminates the need for full‑stainless‑steel flanges and delivers substantial cost savings.
For pipelines carrying highly corrosive media, lap joint flanges with welding‑on rings may be used. The lap shall be titanium, and the fastening flange shall be stainless steel. This arrangement greatly reduces costs while providing corrosion resistance equivalent to that of solid titanium flanges.Connection Method of Lap Joint Flanges with Weld‑on Rings
The medium‑wetted lap is fabricated from high‑grade material and welded to the pipeline. The fastening flange, which has no contact with the medium, is made of relatively low‑cost material for clamping purposes. This design is generally suitable for piping systems with strong‑corrosion media under low‑pressure service conditions.
